Let’s start our days out like four year old Jessica and stand on your sinks, in front of the mirror, and give ourselves a pep talk. We can all do a little self life coaching to lift us over the rough spots in our days.

Gotta love this kid!

A recent Gallup Poll, called the Healthways Well-Being Index, has rated Boulder, Colorado, the #1 healthiest and happiest city in the country. It was based on an analysis of 353,000 Americans in 2009.  The interviewers asked individuals to assess their jobs, finances, physical health, emotional state and communities.

Having just visited my daughter, Grace Boyle, who lives in Boulder, I was not surprised.  The restaurants are excellent, the town is surrounded by boulders, mountains, and forests with Boulder Creek flowing through the center of the town.  Boulder is surrounded by a wonderful greenbelt with 120 miles of trails and there are 9 bookstores between 9th and  18th streets.  Does reading books make us happier?  I’m pretty happy when I spend time in bookstores!

I think the 300 days of sunshine per year in Boulder contributes to feeling happy.  In Iowa, I think we have  almost 300 days of gray skies. Okay, this isn’t official data but it seems true.  I think the sunshine alone adds to their happiness level as I’ve written about in many posts about how 20 minutes/day of skin exposure to sunshine is needed to manufacture Vitamin D in our bodies.

Welcome back to my blogs! I thought it was time to change and usher in the new year with a brand new name and address for my original ‘The Happiness Zone’ blog that I started in January 2007, now called Be Happy Life Coach.

I’m celebrating change and invite you to do the same in your life.  As Johann Goethe wisely stated, ”We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise, we harden…”

So here’s my Top 10 Ways to Be Happy in 2010. I’d love to hear your top 10 of anything too…10 for 2010

1. Walk 10, 000 steps (5 miles) every week. Don’t worry that 10,000 steps are recommended every day.  If I wait for that goal to be met, I won’t even try.  I can always change the words, “every week” to “every day” later on.  It is zero degrees in Iowa right now, so the treadmill is my friend, sort of.

Many of you have asked about the personal life coaching and mentoring that I do, and why I named this blog The Happiness Zone. (In January 2010, it’s now called BeHappyLifeCoach.com) The main reason is because I believe that the glory of life on earth is to expand our possibilities. I like to discover and share possibilities that may help us to be happier. In these economic times, it becomes even more evident that our source of happiness and peace comes from within. So, to stay in the ‘happiness zone’ will give us great support and ease.

We’ve come to a time in our lives, in the United States and other developed countries, that what we depended upon or took for granted, is no longer stable, like the banking system. I guess the trust was only an illusion anyway. As people are losing their jobs, facing foreclosures, and increased prices, it’s crucial that we not be taken down by pessimism or doom and gloom. Therefore, keeping my blog alive with tips and inspiration for happiness is my way of creatinge more joy in the world.

Every Thursday I post a quote or thought for all of us to ponder. Today’s quote is from humanitarian, Lynn Twist, pictured on the right with me in Fairfield, Iowa.
“When a tree falls in Brazil, there is less oxygen in Ohio.”

Lynn is the bestselling author of The Soul of Money and co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance. I had the privilege of taking a long walk with Lynn and my visiting friend and New York Times best selling author, Marci Shimoff, on the walking trails along the lake in my hometown of Fairfield, Iowa. Lynn was visiting our town because she was receiving the Mayor Malloy’s humanitarian award. I found Lynn to be the most genuine down-to-earth yet global thinker I’ve ever met.

Lynn has spent more than three decades working in positions of leadership with many global initiaves including: ending world hunger, protecting the woldks rainforests, empowering indigenous peoples, inproving health, economic, and political conditions for women and children, and advancing the scientific understanding of human consciousness.
She has had many teachers in her life. In addition to being trained by Mother Theresa, some of Lynn’s great teachers are the people she meets in third world countries. For instance, she traveled to Ethiopia during the 1984 famine that killed 1 million people. (more…)

Every Thursday I post a quote or thought for all of us to ponder.

I am a life coach who asks questions to individuals who come to me with questions. Each of us has the answers within ourselves and we are our own best expert, but we don’t always realize it. Have you ever found yourself asking others for advice, and then you sift through it, and decide whether or not to act on their ‘brilliant’ advice? Often, it’s just our doubts and fears that block our clarity and creativity. Those doubts and fears can be questioned. (more…)

Every Thursday I post a quote or thought for all of us to ponder.

My thought for this Thursday is about happiness, In fact, 10 thoughts to be exact, expressed in Top 10 happiness quotes I’ve chosen from my happiness archives. In my coaching and teaching experiences I find that many people use unhappiness to motivate themselves, whether they realize it or not. So often I hear, ” I don’t want to be happy, I just want to attract my perfect partner, then I can be happy.” It’s as though being happy first is not even an option. By staying unhappy, they think they will be more acutely aware, and vigilant in their search. If they were happy now, they’d forget that they wanted to find an ideal partner, and just be in lala land and alone. Why would they forget what they wanted, if they were happy?

What do you think?
We sometimes become accustomed to thinking that we have to get something from outside us in order to be happy. In truth, it works the other way. We can contact our inner Source of happiness, no matter what partner is in our life or not in the picture.

Here are 10 quotes to inspire happiness.

Can you guess where the happiest place on earth is? I read a thought-provoking story on BBC News and thought you’d enjoy it. If you’re seeking happiness, move to Denmark but avoid Burundi in Africa, according to the first world map of happiness. The US ranked #23 and UK #46. The original research was conducted by Adrian White from the University of Leicester in the UK, who used responses of 80,000 people around the world.
It seems that the quality of health care, high gross domestic product, and access to education made for a happy country. I would’ve thought the US ranked higher with these standards in mind.
In addition, if you look at Eric Weiner’s new book, The Geography of Bliss you can follow his footsteps around the world as he looks for happy people and countries.
In reality, it seems that happy is anywhere you decide it to be.
